Dengue virus detection kit can be used for screening and assististing in the diagnosis of early dengue infection from whole blood (venous or fingertip blood), serum or plasma sample. The test is supposed to be used for in vitro qualitative detection of non-structural protein 1 (NS1) of dengue virus. This protein is secreted into the blood during a dengue infection.

Dengue fever is a mosquito-borne viral infection caused by the dengue virus (DENV), which belongs to the Flavivirus family. It is an acute infectious disease transmitted by Aedes aegypti and Aedes albopictus, and is more common in tropical and subtropical regions. The clinical types can be divided into three types: dengue fever, dengue hemorrhagic fever and dengue shock syndrome. The test only needs to use a disposable plastic straw to vertically drop 1 drop of fingertip blood sample or serum, plasma, whole blood sample into the sample well, and then drop 2 drops of sample diluent to start timing. Read the result in 10 minutes, the result is valid within 30 minutes.

Symptoms of Dengue Fever. Symptoms typically appear 4–10 days after being bitten by an infected mosquito and can range from mild to severe. They may include:

  • Sudden high fever (40°C/104°F)
  • Severe headache
  • Pain behind the eyes (retro-orbital pain)
  • Muscle and joint pain ("breakbone fever")
  • Skin rash (may appear 2–5 days after fever starts)
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Fatigue and weakness

Dengue Virus Strains. There are four distinct serotypes of dengue virus: DENV-1, DENV-2, DENV-3, and DENV-4. Infection with one serotype provides lifelong immunity to that serotype but increases the risk of severe dengue if reinfected with another serotype. The primary mode of transmission is through the bite of infected Aedes mosquitoes, especially during the day. Globally, it is estimated that 96 million suspected dengue infections occur annually, and India alone contributes 34% of the global burden.

Treatment. There is no specific antiviral treatment for dengue. Special focus is put on rest and hydration during infection period. Severe cases may require intravenous fluids, blood transfusions, and close monitoring for complications.

Early and accurate diagnosis of dengue infection and initiation of appropriate observation and treatment are therefore key components in the management of dengue infection. Worldwide, there is a pressing need for highly sensitive, inexpensive, and easily performable point-of-care diagnostic tools that have a long shelf life in order to aid the early and rapid diagnosis of dengue virus infections. Rapid diagnostic tests (RDT) are generally more affordable, less time-consuming, user-friendly, easy to perform. This is where Synthgene Dengue Virus Detection Kit comes into play as it is a perfect choice to be used under routine conditions in clinical settings or for self-testing at home.
